VIC: Police praise Victorians for mainly trouble free Eve

MELBOURNE, Jan 1 AAP - Police today praised Victorians for celebrating the new millennium
peacefully, with the night largely trouble free.

Arrests for drunkeness and violence fell dramatically compared to the previous year,
although one woman is in hospital after being stabbed.

With an estimated 400,000 people in central Melbourne shortly before midnight and many
still struggling home after dawn, police came across few problems.
